AMOS MAKOLA
"Optimism is the foundation of courage"
Nicholas Murray Butler
Background
Amos Makola is a 22-year-old young male adult who was admitted in the Shelter on
the 28/10/2005. Amos on admission reported destitution and poverty to be his reason
for leaving his home. He reported that after his parents passed away his sisters
were unable to cater for his needs thus him running away from home. Amos originates
from Eersterust in Hammanskral but indicated that after his parents passed on they
moved to an area of Mmotla and his sister sold their parents stand in Hammanskraal.
At Mmotla life became unbearable that he needed to fend for himself at the local
train station. His sister lost his job and became dependent on the odd money's he
made at the station. This he indicated was the beginning of his nightmare. He ended
up not being able to meet his sisters' demand thus ended up not coming back home.
He opted to sleep at the station. Whilst sleeping at the station he decided to come
to Pretoria town for greener pastures. In Pretoria he was taken to Doxa house and
was later referred to The Self - Help Shelter.
Process
Amos after admission in the institution was enrolled in motor mechanics learnership
with SAPS and Midway Two contractors. His progress was so satisfactory. He received
a stipend of R1025.00 Per month from midway two contractors, for him to provide
for his basic needs. The institution is a skills development shelter thus has to
accommodate all beneficiaries for a certain period whilst dealing with their emotional
instability and rehabilitation programmes . Amos has since been in the shelter enjoying
all the benefits provided. In an interview with the resident social worker he indicated
that he would like to be independent from the shelter. Amos was exited from the
institution after completing his level 1 motor mechanics with Midway Two Contractors
and was employed permanently as a garage assistance in SAPS Benoni garage. In 2007
he enrolled for his trade test of which he passed. Amos is currently employed by
the SAPS garage in Mussina as a senior artisan holding the rank of an inspector
in the South African Police Services.
As the supervisor he oversee the service of 7 people in the mechanics section of
Mussina garage. He sees himself growing within the SAPS and has a dream of becoming
a station commissioner. He has bought himself a stand in Hebron to build himself
a house and will soon be getting married to his long time girlfriend. Amos visits
his family on a monthly basis providing support to his cousin brother who is pursuing
a degree with UNISA.
Amos attributes his success to the choices he made when he was young and vulnerable,
he made wisdom provision for his journey of youth to old age, for it is the more
certain support than all possessions.
The Self-Help Skills Training shelter certainly prides itself in beneficiaries of
Amos's caliber.
Hence our motto "Creating Self Sustainability through skills development and behavior
modification"

about bursaries that are awarded by his church and took an opportunity to apply
for it. The institution provided him with shelter and the basic needs whilst he
was trying all means to be enrolled in a tertiary institution. In 2007 Simon was
awarded a bursary by Bishop Edward Lekganyane bursary funds. However after the awarding

Currently Simon is a final year student at the Tshwane University of Technology

was encouraged to have perseverance and taught forgiveness and the ability to share.
He has now forgiven his family and has maintained a good relationship with them.
He now regularly visits them during school holidays and shares a lot with them.
He looks behind with pride and wishes all young people going through hard times
not to despair but to have courage for the future.
He believed in the saying by Isabelle Holland that says
"As long as you don't forgive, who and what ever it is will occupy rent-free space
in your mind"
